Mexico positions itself in the sale of electric cars in Latin America

MEXICO – As the years go by, interest in electric vehicles has increased considerably, as many countries have focused on promoting and strengthening sustainability and energy efficiency. In 2022 alone, 6,000 units were sold in Mexico, although this figure is expected to increase even more in the future.

According to Statista, the percentage recorded last year is equivalent to 33% more than that reported in 2021 and thus became the marketing leader in Latin America, followed by Brazil with 5,100 units and Colombia with 2,400.

According to the international statistics portal, the country will reach 18,900 electric vehicles in 2026, which would generate a three-fold increase in sales in three years, due to the high demand for electric cars in Mexico, which is the highest in the region compared to other nations.Meanwhile, Brazil is expected to reach 16,000 vehicles and Colombia 7,000.

Thus, between January and June 2023, a total of 30,023 vehicles with this type of technology were sold in the domestic market, 30% more than last year. In addition, it corresponds to 4.5% of the total sales of light vehicles during this period in the country, with Mexico City, Mexico, Nuevo Leon, Jalisco and Pueblo being the entities with the highest demand.

It is worth mentioning that there are currently specific insurances for this type of car in Mexico, which offer specialized protection for some specific high-value components, including the battery, charger, inverters and transformers.

The 100% electric cars are the ones that increased their sales the most (+200%), going from 1,703 units in the first half of 2022 to 5,306 in the same period of 2023.
