Air cargo in Mexico grows by 4.5%
Air cargo volume at Mexico’s major airports reached 835,883.9 metric tons from January through August 2026, a 4.5% increase from the 800,124.4 metric tons recorded during the same period in 2025.
According to figures released by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), this growth was driven by international cargo, while domestic shipments declined.
Airport performance varied across the country. Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), Mexico City International Airport (AICM), and Guadalajara handled the largest cargo volumes, although their growth rates differed. Meanwhile, airports such as Tijuana, Cancún, Toluca, and San Luis Potosí recorded declines.
From January through August 2026, international air cargo totaled 591,401.2 metric tons, up 7.3% year over year, an increase of 40,427.1 metric tons.
AIFA ranked first, handling 272,248.6 metric tons of international cargo, a 6.8% increase from the previous year. Guadalajara ranked second, with 105,651.9 metric tons, up 19%.
The AICM handled 130,135 metric tons of international cargo, representing a 2.5% increase. Monterrey recorded 30,822 metric tons, while Querétaro handled 15,809.8 metric tons.
In August alone, international cargo totaled 80,576.9 metric tons, an 11.6% year-over-year increase.
In contrast, domestic air cargo totaled 244,482.7 metric tons from January through August, down 1.9% compared with the same period in 2025. In August, domestic cargo volume fell from 31,403 metric tons a year earlier to 30,621 metric tons.
Overall, Mexico’s air cargo market posted cumulative growth of 4.5% through August 2026, reflecting stronger international operations amid a contraction in domestic cargo traffic.
